Summer is almost over in Indiana House District 88.

Across our four counties and five school corporations, families are preparing for the beginning of the 2026–2027 school year. Because each district follows its own academic calendar, the first day of school does not arrive at the same time for everyone.

2026 School Start Dates in House District 88

Here are the first days of school currently published by the school corporations serving House District 88:

Families should continue checking their school corporation’s official website and parent communications for building-specific information, orientation schedules, transportation updates, and any calendar changes.

As a father, I know how quickly the final quiet mornings of summer turn into packed lunches, rushed breakfasts, backpacks waiting by the door, and one last picture on the front porch.

I also know that every parent is trusting the drivers around them to pay attention and help get their children to school safely.

Slow Down in Indiana School Zones

As students return to class, drivers will once again encounter active school zones, crossing guards, school buses, and more children walking or riding bicycles near our roads.

Indiana allows local communities to establish school-zone speed limits as low as 20 miles per hour. Around House District 88, drivers will commonly see posted limits of 20 or 25 miles per hour.

Follow the posted speed limit whenever a school zone is active. Speeding near a school when children are present is a Class B infraction and can result in a civil judgment of up to $1,000.

The legal penalty matters, but it should not be the primary reason anyone slows down.

Children do not always behave predictably near traffic. A student may step between parked cars, drop something in the street, run toward a waiting parent, or arrive late and hurry toward a bus without checking for vehicles.

Drivers need to expect the unexpected and leave themselves enough time to react.

Know When to Stop for an Indiana School Bus

Indiana law requires drivers to stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended.

The signals are straightforward:

These requirements generally apply whether you are traveling behind the bus or approaching it from the opposite direction.

The Divided-Highway Exception

There is one important exception.

When a highway is divided by a physical barrier, concrete wall, cable barrier, or grassy median, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the school bus are required to stop.

A center turn lane or painted roadway line is not the same as a physical barrier. On a roadway without a physical divider, traffic approaching from both directions must stop.

Passing a Stopped School Bus Has Serious Consequences

Disregarding a school bus stop arm is a Class A infraction in Indiana. A violation can result in a substantial fine and the suspension of driving privileges.

A court may suspend a driver’s license for up to 90 days for a first stop-arm violation. A driver with a previous violation may face a suspension of up to one year.

Recklessly passing a stopped school bus can also lead to criminal charges, particularly when the violation results in an injury.

These laws exist because children are at their most vulnerable when approaching or leaving a school bus. No meeting, appointment, school drop-off, or morning errand is worth risking a child’s life.

Leave Earlier, Put the Phone Down, and Pay Attention

None of this is complicated.

Leave a few minutes earlier. Put the phone down. Slow down near schools, neighborhoods, intersections, and bus stops.

Watch carefully when backing out of a driveway or garage. Expect children to be present before sunrise and during the afternoon commute. Be especially cautious on rural roads where hills, curves, crops, and limited visibility can make it harder to see a stopped bus.

Parents should also review these rules with teenage drivers. A newly licensed driver may never have encountered a bus making repeated stops on a two-lane road or experienced the congestion surrounding a school during morning arrival.

A five-minute conversation at home could prevent a life-changing mistake later.
